Why is plaque located at the carina ? Atherosclerosis and shear stress in human coronary bifurcations -a multislice CT study

Author: J.J. Wentzel, Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics laboratory, Thoraxcenter, Rotterdam

AIM

In clinic practice plaques are also observed at the high shear stress carina (Sianos, Eurorinterv. ‘05)

  • Hypothesis:
    • If plaque is present at high shear stress regions, it will be due to circumferential growth from a low shear stress region
  • Aim:
    • In-vivo minimal-invasive assessment of plaque distribution near bifurcations with multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT).
