OBJECTIVE I

To evaluate the accuracy of the four models based on both angiographic and cast data of the coronary epicardial bifurcations

CONCLUSION I

  • HK model is in agreement with measurements of all bifurcations types (e.g., Y and T) and is based on minimum energy hypothesis
  • Murray and area-preservation models are only in agreement with experimental measurements for T bifurcations but not for Y-bifurcations
  • Finet model is empirical and is in agreement for Y bifurcations but not for T-bifurcations
  • We have implemented an easy to use rule to determine the 3rd diameter of bifurcation (if two of the segment diameters are known) that can be downloaded to an iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.

OBJECTIVE II

Determine the flow pattern (including WSS and OSI) in bifurcations that obey Murray’s and HK angles to assess optimality

CONCLUSION II

  • HK provides higher WSS and lower OSI than Murray’s bifurcations (Y bifurcations)
  • HK provides higher WSS and lower OSI than Finet’s bifurcations (T bifurcations)
  • The previously assumed notion that Murray’s bifurcation angle is ideal for optimal hemodynamics is not correct
