Novel insights from bench and simulation

Bench Testing and Coronary Artery Bifurcations: A Consensus Document from the European Bifurcation Club

Author:  Chatzizisis Y, Cardiovascular Division Brigham and Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA

FUTURE GOAL #1

Refine computer and in vitro simulations by using:

  • Realistic coronary geometries (CT, 3D IVUS, 3D OCT etc)
  • Realistic wall properties (elasticity etc)
  • Realistic blood properties (pulsatile flow etc)
  • Realistic materials (stent, balloon geometry and material)

FUTURE GOAL #2

Use large animal models (e.g. swine) to assess the effect of mechanical interventions on vascular biology

FUTURE GOAL #3

Need for randomized clinical trials comparing stent geometries and stenting techniques in terms of stent thrombosis and restenosis
