Provisional vs. Planned Two-stent Technique in Patients with Distal Bifurcation Left Main Disease Undergoing PCI: The EXCEL Trial

Author: Patrick W. Serruys, Imperial College London, United Kingdom

CONCLUSION

  • In the EXCEL trial, despite the inherent complexity of distal LM trifurcation disease, the PCI procedural technique (including the number of stents used) was similar to treatment of bifurcation disease
  • The rates of cardiac death, ischemia-driven TLR and the primary composite endpoint of death, MI or stroke were similar in patients with trifurcation and bifurcation disease of the distal LM at 30-day and 3-year follow-up
  • These findings support PCI as an acceptable treatment strategy for selected patients with distal LM trifurcation disease
